Chris Barnes

Chris Barnes was born on, December 29, 1966; and grew up in Buffalo NY. The first concert he attended was "Kiss" in 1979. He started his own music career, at the age of 19, with a band named "Tirant Sin", in 1986 in is hometown.

During his first year in college, he had no idea, what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, and one day it came to him; he just got up, and quit school, drove to band rehearsal, and said; this is what he wants to do with his life.

Chris is considered to be one of the founders of death metal, and some refer to him as starting the cookie monster vocals, with his guttural vocal style. Chris has mentioned in interviews, that he gives credit to the band "Possessed" as the founders of death metal.

Chris Barnes, considers himself to be very spiritual, and uses marijuana, as a way to enhance his spirituality.

Here is some info, on the bands, he has worked with.

Tirant Sin

Tirant Sin was originally called Satan's Angel, which the members included; Chris Barnes on vocals, Rich Ziegler on bass, Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums, and Bob Rusay on guitar. They played out a few times, playing just cover songs, which included "Balls to the Wall" and "Dethroned Emperor". Tirant Sin, was a big transition for Chris, from being a fan of music, into being a musician. In 1986 Chris left Tirant Sin, to join Leviathan. Tirant Sin recorded 3 demos, only one that Chris appeared on which is "Mutant Supremacy" when he rejoined Tirant Sin in January 1988. "Mutant Supremacy was independently released in 1988.

Cannibal Corpse

Chris was one of the founders of Cannibal Corpse in Buffalo NY. in 1988, The River Rock in Buffalo, NY was the first club Cannibal Corpse played at,they opened for Dark Angel. They videotaped that show, and, sent that along with their demo to Metal Blade. That's what got them signed. Chris wrote "Butchered At Birth", "The Bleeding", and "Eaten Back To Life" with them. Cannibal Corpse, (though they bounced from Buffalo to Tampa) actually made their permanent move to Tampa, FL. in 1993, for they felt the metal scene was dying in New York, and Florida, had so much more to offer for the metal. Chris left Cannibal Corpse in 1995, to work on his music with "Six feet Under" which had been his side project, since 1992, and Chris felt he was able to expand more, lyrically, and vocally with the music of SFU, Cannibal Corpse wanted him to do, more fast style vocals, which Chris had no interest in. Cannibal Corpse let him go, and  Six Feet Under, began to take off.

Releases with Chris Barnes:

Eaten Back to Life (1990)

Butchered at Birth (1991)

Tomb of the Mutilated (1992)

The Bleeding (1994)

Vile (1996) originally titled "Created To Kill" original vocal tracks and lyrics were scrapped, and rerecorded by Fisher; and the album was re-named "Vile".

One of Cannibal Corpse's first gigs ever!

Six Feet Under

Originally formed by Chris Barnes, and guitarist Allen West of Obituary, in Tampa, FL, in 1993. Six Feet Under was originally a side project, (playing death metal style covers, of various songs) They were joined by bassist Terry Butler (previous member of Massacre and Death) and drummer Greg Gall(Butler's brother in-law).

After Barnes and West united, they hired Terry Butler, and Greg Gall(Terry Butler's brother-in-law). Six Feet Under first played in 1993 at clubs, performing mainly cover songs. The band began to write original material in the 1994. Since Chris was already a member of Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under they were automatically signed to Metal Blade Records. They released their first album, "Haunted" on September 1, 1995.

Recently, bass player; Terry Butler, and drummer; Greg Gall, left the band, on good terms. Butler's statement was (posted 1/31/11 on blabbermouth.net) "I would just like to put it out there that Greg Gall [drums] and I have parted ways with SIX FEET UNDER. As many of you know, I have been helping OBITUARY". Kevin Talley, Gall on drums. Barnes stated "I am 110% stoked to have Kevin join SFU he is undeniably one of the best, if not THE best drummer in death metal, and i'm proud to have him along".

Torture Killer

Torture Killer started out as a band playing, Six Feet Under, and Obituary songs, for fun, and decided to start a Six feet Under cover band in the spring of 2002, and soon began to write their own material. While Torture Killer was on the "Blast Your Violence" European tour, Chris approached them. The name Torture Killer caught Chris' attention and he decided to check them out. While communicating with them, he learned, they had some problems, with their lineup. November, 2005, Chris officially joined Torture Killer and Torture Killer was signed to Metal Blade records. Chris wrote the lyrics for more than half of the songs, of their second album "swarm" which they started to record early in 2005.

"Swarm" was released in february 2006, lNew songs were written in 2007 and the band recorded the basic tracks for their third Torture Killer album.

In february 2008 the band parts ways with Barnes on good terms, considering, they had  two separate lineups, and it was not  working out, Juri Sallinen; then became the lead vocalist for the band!

I like some metal, but the screamo type is usually not to my taste. Chris Barnes is not someone I had heard of before, and I doubt I will find myself listening to him in the future, but thanks for the introduction. Voted up.

Cool stuff! I didn't realize that Chris Barnes was in so many bands (sadly, I only know him from Cannibal Corpse). I do like him as a vocalist, but I don't think he's very unique... he sounds like many other death metal vocalists. I agree, he's not a screamo vocalist in any way. Very detailed hub.
